"NEW FACES JOIN THE FIGHT AGAINST CRIME

The fight against crime has been strengthened by the arrival of two new faces in the Birmingham Community Safety Partnership Team (BCSP), based at 26 Waterloo Street.

Natasha Patel joined the team in August as Communications Officer from Wolverhampton Community Safety Partnership, having spent 3 years as a Neighbourhood Safety Co-ordinator in one of Wolverhampton’s priority neighbourhoods.

“I became interested in communications after I had been volunteered to play the role of editor for a local community newspaper.  I had lots of communication ideas that I wanted to try which I had picked up from my community safety experience and when I saw this role, I thought it would be the ideal opportunity in that it allowed me to remain within the community safety field and be a little creative!

Birmingham Community Safety Partnership which includes the Drug Action Team and Birmingham Anti-Social Behaviour Unit (BASBU), have been implementing successful crime reduction initiatives over the last few years but we need to be more pro-active in informing the community about our activity. This is where my role comes in.”

Communication between the agencies within the partnership and communicating with the wider community are key focuses of the role.

Colin Murphy who previously served as an Inspector with West Midlands Police, joined BCSP in September. Colin is no stranger to the work of the partnership. He previously spent 5 years as the Police Local Authority Liaison Officer (LALO) between 1997 and 2002.  During his time as the LALO, Colin worked on the original Crime and Disorder Audit and Strategy and worked extensively on Burglary Reduction, Truancy, Neighbourhood Wardens and CCTV funding programmes.

“I have 30 years experience of policing in Birmingham, much of which has been spent on crime prevention and community safety activity.  My experience in community safety partnership work will be put to the test in this new role as ‘CCTV Co-ordinator’ for the City.”

Colins’ post was established following the ‘Report to the City Council – A Review of CCTV in Birmingham’ which identified the need to support and co-ordinate CCTV activity throughout the City."
