Firework safety for the mobile phone generation

West Midlands Fire Service have developed a multi media approach to reducing the risk to children and youths from fireworks using DVDs and mobile phones to get the message across.

Messing with Fireworks, Messing with Lives” is a campaign to reduce injuries within the Birmingham area. (Click on the image for a closer look at the DVD cover)

For the past three years Hay Mills Fire Safety Centre has been running a fireworks safety campaign.

After the evaluation of the 2005 campaign it was highlighted that the Ward End area of Birmingham was a hot spot for fireworks related incidents.

In June 2006 the Local Delivery Group for Hodge Hill district was attended to discuss a method of reducing the number of incidents in 2006 in the area. Following a meeting with The Over Pool Media Project which tackles community problems through media, a DVD was produced to draw attention to fireworks safety and anti-social use of fireworks.

Funding for the DVD was obtained through the Fire Service Intervention Fund and Hodge Hill Ward Advisor Board. A local media company was employed to work with Over Pool Media Project to produce 1500 DVDs.

The DVD consists of:

  • ‘Out with Izzy’ - aimed at Primary Schools, a 3-minute animation showing the main do’s and don’ts with fireworks.
  • ‘The Gift’ – aimed at Secondary Schools and upper Primary (Years 5 & 6 where there are problems with anti-social behaviour). This is a 6 minute film, highlighting the dangers and consequences of messing around with fireworks.

The DVD will be distributed to all schools in the West Midlands area and forms part of the fireworks education pack used by watches to deliver the fireworks safety message for 2006.

A short 2-minute version has been edited to view by mobile phone and sent out to children in the west midlands.  To download a copy, right-click the heading below and choose the save as option (you can also view the file from your PC by left-clicking - although you will need to have the Apple - Quicktime viewer installed)

The production of this DVD has given young people a chance to influence the community they live in and solve local problems and gain experience in a professional field which can lead to a career in the media.
