New Birmingham Website Hosts World Map Winner

Birmingham Community Safety Partnership is to re-launch its website to provide a new and improved information service on crime reduction to the city and the rest of the world. The site will also reveal the city’s first world award winning map.

The site www.birmingham-csp.org.uk will be officially re-launched by Cllr Jim Whorwood on Monday 14th November 2005 providing up-to-date information on what’s happening across the city and give access to crime reduction strategies and information on how Birmingham Community Safety Partnership (BCSP) is working to ‘Make Birmingham Safer.’

Councillor Jim Whorwood, Cabinet Member for Local Services and Community Safety said: “Community Safety is a key priority for the council and is a key concern for Birmingham citizens. It is essential that we use the latest means of communication and this website is an example of how BCSP is determined to provide an excellent and relevant service. This improved website will enable agencies and the wider community to see what the city and its partners are doing to make Birmingham a safer place for us all to live.”

The Partnership has six core priorities which include creating a safer & cleaner City and providing effective drug treatment services across the city.

Assistant Chief Constable Patani, who is currently Chair of the Partnership said:  “West Midlands Police has a strong working partnership with Birmingham Community Safety Partnership, achieving significant successes in reducing crime and incidents of anti-social behaviour, through joint initiatives.”

Earlier this year, the BCSP won best overall map in the 8th Annual International Crime Mapping Conference held in Savannah, USA, beating entries from all over the world.

The Partnership entered the crime mapping competition with a map showing priority neighbourhoods based on crime related information.

Assistant Chief Constable Patani added: “This was a real achievement in recognition of the hard work of the Partnership and the Information & Intelligence Team. It also shows that the Partnership is receiving international recognition for its excellence in crime mapping and its strategic approach to making Birmingham safer.”

The map is taken from the ‘Birmingham Community Safety Assessment’ which is produced by the Information & Intelligence Team which provides strategic guidance to the city’s authorities.

Speaking in support of the website, Cllr Tim Huxtable, Chair of Community Safety Scrutiny said: “I welcome the launch of the website and am very keen to inform people about community safety in Birmingham. This initiative is key in the drive to help people feel safer.”

The assessments are nationally and internationally recognised as highly innovative best practice combining Police, Fire, and Ambulance data, with data from other sources such as the Census 2001and perception based surveys such as Feeling the Difference and MORI Polls.
