Community Safety Mapping Online System (COSMOS)

The creation of a web based dissemination tool named COSMOS (Community Safety Mapping On-line System) for Birmingham Community Safety Partnership commenced in October 2002. Mapping capabilities provide a tool to plot geographic concentrations of community safety information. This is the key method of presenting information complimented by other visuals such as tables and graphs. COSMOS is a highly intuitive, user friendly package which allows the user to report data from a wide range of community safety agencies (currently West Midlands Police, Birmingham Youth Offending Services, Ambulance Service and West Midlands Fire Service with work on-going to integrate environmental data) using a wide portfolio of standard and ad hoc geographic areas. COSMOS is currently managed by the Information and Intelligence Team within the Birmingham Community Safety Partnership Team. |
Currently COSMOS is available through a password protected web portal. In total the system has 450 named users representing forty different organisations and agencies within Birmingham and the West Midlands.
COSMOS has been a very successful development for the Birmingham Community Safety Partnership. The system has generated interest from CDRPs/CSPs within the West Midlands region, nationally and also internationally. An invitation to present COSMOS and the work of the Partnership from the 7th International Crime Mapping Conference in Boston USA was accepted in April 2004.
