Erdington

Erdington The Erdington Constituency has 4 Wards within its boundary, these being Erdington, Tyburn, Kingstanding and Stockland Green. The population is 90,600, which are predominately white, but there is a thriving community of Asian owner-occupiers and shopkeepers within the Stockland Green Ward. Deprivation within the Erdington Constituency is mixed as there are areas in the worst 1% of.

 

There are five areas in the worst 1 – 4.9%. These figures make up about one quarter of the Constituency. There are approximately 7500 social housing accommodation units, most of which sit within the most deprived areas.

 

Erdington Local Delivery Group (ELDG)

Erdington Local Delivery Group (ELDG) is the Constituency's key mechanism for working towards crime reduction and promoting community safety. The ELDG was formed in November 2004.

Erdington LDG carried out a review of its structure. This review resulted in 4 focus groups being set up to deal with:

•  Anti Social Behaviour

•  Violent Crime

•  Safety Partnership

•  Young People

The ELDG meets bi-monthly to receive reports and updates from each group and to ensure progress.

Outcome Based Key Successes:

Anti-Social Behaviour – This group has successfully put together a 5-aside football tournament in a hotspot area. Produced ‘Football Welcome’ signs for all parks (funded by Aston Villa) Created and developed Neighbourhood Tasking, there are now 7 tasking groups operating within Erdington. Ensured that links between Neighbourhood Tasking and Safer Estates are open and clear. Created new referral process for Safer estates to ensure better partnership working. Worked to seize and crash mini motos in problem area.

Violent Crime – Priority for this group is Public Place Wounding (PPW). The group has developed a Pub Watch and Business Watch; Police Operation Namely is an essential part of this group. The group has enhanced working partnership. This group oversee the North Birmingham Alcohol Arrest Referral Scheme. The group also deals with drug issues and works within Drug Watch Scheme. There have been a number of drug sweeps in pubs carried out in Erdington. Domestic Violence is a priority for this group and we are looking at ways to increase awareness, reduce offending and provide better victim support.

Safety Partnership – This groups targets is Acquisitive Crime, Burglary, Vehicle Crime, Criminal Crime and Business Crime. Working in partnership a number of areas have received full home safety checks from the Fire Service (officers have been trained to carry out property marking). Joint Police and Fire letters have been produced. Litter and Graffiti are also targets and joint enforcement work has been carried out. Fire and Arson is monitored, the Erdington has seen a 42% reduction. Business Watch has been set up on Erdington High Street. 

Young People – This group looks at young people as victim and offender. Community Safety workshops have been developed within schools. To date 5 secondary schools have received one full day workshops on Community Safety.  Links have been developed with all Extended school Cluster coordinator. This group is overseeing the development of the mini motto track. This group works closely with Community Action Team (pupil watch) to ensure they are active within the constituency. The group has also produced a Young Person Guide to Erdington ‘Bored’.

All groups are operated as a partnership and actions are monitored each month.

Plans for the Future.

Erdington Local Delivery Group is committed to ensuring resident involvement in all aspects of partnership working. The ELDG will continue to develop Neighbourhood Tasking and look to create new projects that will increase community safety within the Erdington Constituency.
